Dr Martin Mitchell
Researcher | Trainer | Speaker

Martin is a Senior Researcher within the Society and Change team. He first joined the NatCen in the Qualitative Research Unit in April 2005. Since then he has worked on a number of qualitative studies involving the use of in-depth interviews, face-to-face and online focus groups, observations and deliberative methods. He has conducted research in many areas including equalities and discrimination, bullying and harassment, same sex relationships, sexual orientation, gender identity, benefit reforms, drug treatment services, drug prevention and a number of programmes targeted at children and young people. He has also taught widely on in-depth interviewing skills, managing challenging interviews, research ethics and research governance and supports the work of other qualitative researchers through his involvement NatCen's Qualitative Methods Group. He is a member of the Equality and Diversity Forum.

Before working at NatCen Martin worked for five years as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Health Services Research, University of Bedfordshire. He conducted qualitative and survey research with a wide range of health/ social service users and professionals across the primary care, acute and voluntary sectors. He also worked for five years as Lecturer in Sociology teaching research methods and gender and sexuality modules for Sociology, Social Policy and Women's Studies undergraduates.
Martin holds a doctorate examining the implications of gay men's household patterns for the provision of health and social care at London South Bank University. He also completed a MA in Sociology and Qualitative Research at Goldsmiths' College, University of London.
