About this study

Exploring the experience of homelessness among lesbian and gay youth, this study specifically identifies the causes of homelessness and the role played by sexuality. You can read some key findings from the study here and the full report here.

The study identified a broad range of causes and impacts of homelessness. It found that sexuality could play a key part in a person's experience of homelessness, but that it could also be peripheral or have no role.

Our researchers also looked at the contact young lesbian and gay youth had with voluntary and statutory agencies and considered strategies for tackling the problem of homelessness among this group.

Potential policy impact

The study has a range of implications for the way in which services should respond to lesbian and gay youth who are experiencing homelessness, both in terms of the client relationships and service provision.

Method

The study involved a number of stages including a literature review, in-depth interviews with 33 young lesbian and gay people, and workshops with organisation representatives.
