About this study
This three year study will find out about the attitudes of young
people to a range of issues and how these attitudes may impact on
their educational achievement. The study is also taking place in
Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.
This study will look at young people's:
- views about school,
- social relationships,
- leisure activities, and
- how these may impact on their achievements at school and their plans for the future.
Researchers will compare the experiences of different groups of young people, including young people from the other countries participating in the study.
Methods
In the first year of the study schools were randomly selected to
take part. At each participating school two classes of Year 10
pupils wererandomly selected to complete a questionnaire and some
written exercises.
Parents were also be asked to complete a short questionnaire to
give more information about the young person's family
background.
We'll be looking at how young people's views about education,
social relationships and other issues change over time and will
contact some young people again one and two years after they first
take part in the study.
How we're working
The New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Co-operation in Europe (NORFACE) has given funding to a collaboration of researchers from the University of Mannheim, University of Oxford, University of Stockholm, University of Tilburg and University of Utrecht to conduct the Youth in Europe Study. We are working with the University of Oxford to carry out the fieldwork in England.
