This one day course enables participants to acquire the tools and techniques for drawing policy recommendations from their research findings and conclusions.

Course outline

Understanding the policy context:
  • Presentation: the key characteristics of policy domains.

  • Exercise: understanding a policy issue.

How research can help policy makers:
  • Presentation: the varieties of research and their value for policy.

  • Exercise: Analysing what your research offers
Designing and managing policy research:
  • Presentation: How research design and management can help to move beyond conclusions to recommendations.
Drafting policy recommendations:
  • Presentation: choosing language to suit topic and audience.

  • Exercise: drawing recommendations from research findings.

The course will be delivered through a mixture of presentations, discussions and practical sessions. Participants will each receive a resource folder.

Who is it aimed at?

This is an intermediate level course, which assumes a general familiarity with qualitative or quantitative research methods. But you don’t need to have experience of using these methods.

The course is relevant to those working in universities, consultancy settings, government departments or the voluntary sector. You will find it useful if:

  • you are working as a researcher in fields relevant to public policy or professional practice

  • you are required to translate research findings and conclusions into recommendations for policy or practice change
