Introduction to Framework in NVivo

NatCen Learning

This one day course is designed to enable participants to use the new framework features of NVivo. The course will be delivered through a series of practical demonstrations and exercises that will take participants through the process of using the software for data management, starting with project set up through to producing matrix displays of managed data. The day will not cover the process of interpreting the data which is covered on our two day analysis course. The course will be delivered by members of the Qualitative Research Unit at the National Centre for Social Research.

All participants will receive a course resource booklet.


Course outline
Course content covers:

  • Terminology used within Framework approach and in the software
  • Logging on, creating a new project and importing data
  • Creating and editing analytical frameworks
  • Coding data
  • Creating and editing data summaries
  • Creating and applying attribute labels
  • Creating matrices populated with summaries
  • Ordering and filtering data to facilitate data analysis


Who is it aimed at?
This course will be useful to you if you:

  • are familiar with the Framework approach to qualitative data management and want to use  the Framework features in NVivo
  • have attended NatCen Learning's analysis of qualitative data course and want to now learn how to use the NVivo software to support a Framework approach to data management


Learning outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:

  • set up a project within the software and import data
  • construct and edit a thematic framework
  • create and edit data summaries
  • produce Framework Matrices showing summarised data
  • filter and order your data to facilitate analysis
