Moderating focus groups

Building on participants' prior experience, this two day course gives participants an overview of the role and function of using focus groups as a method of data collection in qualitative research. It aims to equip them with additional skills and techniques necessary for facilitating focus groups to a high standard in applied research settings.

  • designing focus groups
  • focus group demonstration
  • moderating with a topic guide
  • the role of the moderator
  • engaging group participants in the discussion, keeping focused on the research questions
  • focus group practical sessions

Who is it aimed at?

This is an advanced level course. It assumes an understanding of the basic principles of qualitative research, along with some prior experience of the skills involved in qualitative interviewing on a one to one basis. These include listening, questioning and probing skills.

If you are new to qualitative research, we recommend that you attend our Depth interviewing skills course before attending this one.

You will find the course useful if:

  • you are already familiar with, and have experience of, the skills and techniques needed to conduct in-depth interviews
  • you are experienced in conducting focus groups but wish to refresh and review your skills
  • you commission or manage qualitative research in central or local government, health or other applied policy sectors


Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will:

  • be able to appreciate the role and value of using focus groups
  • be able to assess when and why it is appropriate to use focus groups as a method of data collection
  • be able to demonstrate a clear appreciation of the role of the moderator in focus group situations
  • be able to adapt the key skills of listening, questioning and probing to the group context
  • be able to implement some of the skills and techniques necessary for facilitating a group dynamic
  • be able to understand the range of practical considerations which are needed when organising focus groups
  • have practical experience of observing, participating or facilitating focus groups
