The Health Survey for England is an annual survey designed to provide information about the health of people in England.

It is being carried out on behalf of the NHS Information Centre for health and social care, by the National Centre for Social Research and the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL (University College London).

The Health Survey for England has been carried out each year since 1991 and collects regular information on various aspects of the nation’s health that cannot be obtained from other sources. Each year a fresh set of people is interviewed. The survey asks questions about their general health and lifestyle, any treatment they receive, and takes some measurements. The survey is used to:

  • Help plan NHS services
  • Look at ways of improving people’s health
  • Look at changes to the nation’s health over time
