Key findings from the 2006 survey
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of death in England, (although rates are falling). Around one in seven adults has some form of cardiovascular disease. Many risk factors for CVD are known, (such as poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption) and can be modified through lifestyle changes.

 

Around three in ten children aged 2-15 are either overweight or obese. Childhood overweight and obesity can be linked with numerous long-term and immediate health risks.

The focus for The Health Survey for England 2006 was cardiovascular disease and risk factors in adults; and obesity and other health risk factors in children.

As well as a general population sample of adults and children, an additional boost sample of children was interviewed about their health.

The interview asked all respondents about their general health, cardiovascular disease, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking and fruit and vegetable consumption.


Nurses also took measures of blood pressure and waist and hip size and samples of blood, saliva and urine.
