Qualitative research

We combine experience and innovation in qualitative methods to bring comprehensive and vibrant accounts of lived experiences direct to decision makers.

About our qualitative research

NatCen are passionate about conducting rigorous, ethical and innovative qualitative research built on the expert use of a range of qualitative methods.

These skills are best showcased when clients ask us to research difficult issues with hard to reach groups. We use depth interviews, focus groups and observational and deliberative methods to present the social world in all its richness and complexity.

We also provide more immediate qualitative insight, using telephone interviews, collecting and analysing data online and adopting multi-media consultative techniques such as vox pops, video ethnography and peer-to-peer interviewing. These methods retain NatCen's core principles of rigour and ethics while reflecting our commitment to adopt methods that best fit the needs and budgets of clients.

How we can help you

We are at the forefront of innovation in qualitative practise and methods, illustrated by the development of Framework (now incorporated into NVivo 9), a bespoke qualitative data management tool that helps analysts realise the full potential of qualitative data.

Specialist qualitative researchers are located across our substantive teams. They combine their expertise with detailed policy knowledge to deliver large scale evaluations and longitudinal studies as well as smaller and more immediate outputs in shorter timeframes.

Methodological innovation and development is fostered and encouraged through NatCen's qualitative methods group.
