Svetlana Speight
Researcher

Svetlana has been at NatCen since 2003, and is currently a Research Director in the Children and Young People team. Most recently, Svetlana has been working on an evaluation of a youth development programme Teens and Toddlers, which aims to prevent teenage pregnancy and to improve teenage girls' emotional and social well-being. Svetlana has also worked on a number of studies in the area of childcare and early years education, exploring patterns of childcare use by different types of families and take-up of early years provision by children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Svetlana has a long-standing interest is in maternal employment and gender inequalities at work and at home.

In 2006, she completed a D.Phil. thesis at the University of Oxford, which compared gender-role attitudes and perceptions of gender inequality in Great Britain and Russia. Before moving to the UK, Svetlana carried out research on gender issues in Russia. Her main methodological strengths include advanced skills in using quantitative methods of data analysis, and substantial experience of designing and implementing large-scale surveys.
