Benchmarking Data

Benchmarking Data

Institutions can benchmark themselves once against aggregated data drawn from at least six different institutions (the choice of institutions is at the discretion of the institution requesting the benchmarking data). This can be done for the 2010-11 data.

All institutions that participate in the 2010-11 survey which ends in January 2012 have the opportunity to benchmark their own results against their own selection of peer institutions for the 2010-11 financial year. Each institution that participated in the 2010-11 survey will be permitted ONE request for benchmarking data. This service will be provided by NatCen free of charge. To guarantee the confidentiality of the responses of institutions, the benchmarking provided will be based on an aggregation of the data returns from at least SIX or more participating institutions.

To enable any institution wishing to receive benchmarking data to gain the most out of the benchmarking exercise, they will be able to choose which institutions they want to receive benchmarking for, with a minimum of SIX institutions needing to be chosen. The data from the chosen institutions will be presented in aggregated form next to the requesting institutions own data, so that the confidentiality of any individual institution's answers is preserved.

If you have any questions about this service, please contact the NatCen survey team on 020 7549 9584 or at rosscasesurvey@natcen.ac.uk.

Data sharing between institutions

The survey and the benchmarking service offered to every participant is firmly based on the principle that all published data will be anonymised. As last year, in 2010-11 the questionnaire has a new question – question 24 – which provides each survey participant with the opportunity to join such a data sharing group if they so wish. Participation is entirely voluntary and those choosing this option will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement before any data is shared.

If you say yes, NatCen will include your answers in a spreadsheet, along with those of other institutions who agree, which will be circulated to those agreeing to participate on a confidential basis after the publication of the survey report (expected March 2012). If you answer no or the question is left blank, NatCen will assume you do not wish your answers to be shared with others, and the normal arrangements regarding confidentiality will apply.
