Topic coverage

As with previous rounds, Round 4 included a mixture of 'core' modules (asked every round) and 'rotating' modules (which cover a particular topic in more detail and are designed to be repeated less regularly).

Core modules include:

Trust in institutions
Political Engagement
Socio-political values
Moral and social values
Social capital
Social exclusion
National, ethnic, religious identity
Well-being, health and security
Demographic composition
Education and occupation
Financial circumstances
Household circumstances

The Round 4 rotating modules were:

Welfare. Subjects covered include:
- Attitudes towards welfare provision
- Size of claimant groups
- Views on taxation
- Attitudes towards service delivery
- Likely future dependence on welfare

Ageism. Subjects covered include:
- Attitudes towards and experiences of ageism
- Age related status
- Stereotypes
- Experience of discrimination
- Contact with people in other age groups

Method

The ESS datasets, including Round 4, are freely available via the ESS's data website. Highly user-friendly, it offers data users the options of conducting simple analyses on-line, and of downloading all or parts of the dataset for more
detailed or complex analyses. A web-based training tutorial, ESS EduNet, is also available to aid the less experienced user.
