If you are visiting this site, you may have received one of our
letters asking you to take part in our study. If you have already
taken part, many thanks for your help and we hope you enjoyed the
interview.
You can read some general information about the study here.
Please see our FAQ section below for more information about
actually taking part in the study.
If your household has received a letter about the study, one of our interviewers will visit you to ask if you would like to take part and arrange a time that is convenient for you. The interviewer will be from NatCen (National Centre for Social Research). The interviewer will carry an official identification card which includes their photograph and the NatCen logo.
We cannot call on everybody in the country so we randomly select a representative sample of households from Royal Mail's list of addresses.
It's important that everyone is included in the Family Resources Survey - adults of all ages, from people living alone to large families - so that it reflects the living conditions of the wider population. To make sure the results are accurate we rely on the participation of people living at the addresses chosen for the study - no-one else can take your place. We are not permitted to interview at addresses other than those selected as this would bias the results.
Yes. The information you give us will be treated as strictly confidential as directed by the National Statistics Code of Practice. It will be used to produce statistics that will not identify you or anyone in your household. Survey information is also provided to other approved organisations for statistical purposes only. All such statistics produced are subject to the Code and the same standards of protection are applied to your information at all times.
You don't need any special knowledge to take part. None of the questions are difficult, they are concerned with your circumstances and those of any other adults living in your household. People who agree to be interviewed say they have enjoyed the experience.
No. You won't receive any 'junk mail' as a result of taking part. We do not pass addresses on to other organisations for commercial purposes.
