Health Survey for England 2010
About the Study
The 2010 report for the Health Survey for England focuses on
respiratory health and lung function. The report provides the
latest findings from the authoritative health survey with trends
dating back to 1993.
The 2010 report also includes chapters on sexual health and
contraception, well-being, kidney disease, dental health and
obesity. As in previous years, the survey covers core modules such
as alcohol consumption, smoking and fruit and vegetable
consumption, which are reported in trend tables.
Key measures, including blood pressure and waist and hip
circumference, and blood, saliva and urine samples, were obtained
by our nurses from all those who gave consent.
Potential policy impact
The Health Survey for England is funded by The NHS Information
Centre and informs health policy in England.
In 2010 the Health Survey provides an important picture of
respiratory health and lung function- as well as asking questions
about respiratory conditions, our nurses measured lung function to
show whether people have signs of possible disease. The Department
of Health launched its Outcomes Strategy for people with COPD and
asthma in England in 2011, with the aim of improving outcomes for
COPD and asthma through high-quality prevention, detection and
treatment and care services. The HSE 2010 data provide a baseline
against which future progress can be measured.
Methods
In 2010 a total of 8,420 adults and 5,692 children were
interviewed.
Participants were selected using a random probability sample. The
survey design ensures that every address has an equal chance of
being included in the survey and the results are representative of
the English population living in private households.
Data was collected through an interview, and if participants
agreed, a visit from a specially trained nurse.
