About this study

Findings from this study were used to produce  guidelines to help Special Schools deliver the National Healthy Schools enhancement model. There is no final report for this study.

Once a school has National Healthy School status they can follow the enhancement model to further improve healthy behaviour among pupils.

Schools need to deliver measurable improvements and use health interventions that target pupils, including the most vulnerable.

Our evaluation looked at a number of key stages in the implementation process:

  • schools' identification of their pupils' health and well being needs
  • how schools found out about suitable health and well being activities
  • the factors that influenced the implementation of different health and well being activities
  • how schools measured and evaluated their health and well being activities

Potential policy impact

Findings from this study have been used to produce best practise guidelines for Special Schools implementing the enhancement model. Our findings directly support the National Healthy Schools Programme.

Methods

Our researchers conducted in-depth interviews with Healthy School lead teachers and other Special School senior staff engaged in delivering the enhancement model. We purposively sampled 7-10 Special Schools, with the aim of maximising the diversity of the schools we were speaking to.
