What is the International Survey of Adult Skills?

This study is being conducted amongst 16-65 year olds. It will ask people about the skills and competencies they use in their everyday life, education and work. As well as the United Kingdom, it is being conducted in 25 other countries. It is the most comprehensive international study of adult skills ever undertaken.

Will I be rewarded for taking part?

Everyone who completes this study will be sent a gift card, as a thank you for their time. These can be used just like cash in a wide selection of leading High Street stores.

Why is this study important?

It's important that the government has up to date information about the kinds of skills people use in everyday life, so that they can assess how well their policies in regards to education and skills are working and what changes may need to be made in the future. This study is being carried out in many countries around the world, which will allow the government to compare the United Kingdom to other European countries, America and Japan.

Who is carrying out the survey?

The study has been commissioned by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills. The National Foundation for Education Research (nfer) is leading the study in partnership with ourselves, TNS-BMRB and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.

What happens if I’m out when the interviewer comes round?

If the selected person is unable to do the interview when he or she comes round, the interviewer will be happy to arrange to come back at a more convenient time.

What happens to the information I give?

The information that is collected will be used solely for research purposes and is entirely confidential, in line with the Data Protection Act. No individual will be identifiable from the results. Your answers will be combined with those of others that take part in this study. Your name and address details are kept separate from your answers and will not be passed on to the Department of Business, Skills & Innovation or any other organisation without your expressed permission.
