Perceptions of Income in Retirement

Jul 2011 |

About the study

The overall aim of this research was to provide greater understanding of how people feel about their retirement income, in relation to what they consider to be appropriate or adequate income, how they determine what is adequate, and their thoughts about the future as they go further into retirement.

Potential policy impact

Although a recent report found that 'many people would need a standard of living similar to working life to be satisfied with their retirement income', it is not known how people determined what was an appropriate retirement income. This study provides policy-makers insight into this issue in order to inform public debate and policy development around the financial situation of older people in retirement.

Method

30 in-depth interviews with older people aged 60-75+
