Summary

Some of the key findings from the 2007-08 Ross-CASE survey were:

  1. In 2007-08 UK universities secured 54 per cent more philanthropic funds than in 2005-06.
  2. Universities who took part in the £7 million Universities UK funding scheme reported an increase in new funds.
  3. The number of donors giving to universities has increased.
  4. The proportion of donors who are alumni is declining.
In 2007-08 UK universities secured 54 per cent more philanthropic funds than in 2005-06.

Universities secured £682 million in new funds in 2007-08, which represents a growth of 28 per cent over the year.  In 2006-07 universities secured £531 million, which represents a growth of 20 per cent over the year from 2005-6, when universities raised £442 million.

Universities who took part in the £7 million Universities UK funding scheme reported an increase in new funds.

The universities who participated in the £7 million Universities UK sponsored Matched Funding scheme which began in 2004, reported an increase in the new funds secured (£743,000 in 2006-07 increasing to £905,000 in 2007-08).

The number of donors giving to universities has increased.

Overall, the total number of donors who gave to universities was 144,282 in 2007-08, an increase of 12 per cent since 2006-07 and 32 per cent since 2005-06.

The proportion of donors who are alumni is declining.

The proportion of the total donors who were alumni donors has decreased since 2005-06 from 94 per cent to 82 per cent in 2007-08.
