About this study

This authoritative study is the only national overview of childcare and early years provision in Wales. It provides accurate and up-to-date information about the following topics:

  • childcare arrangements made by families

  • their views of the childcare providers they use

  • families' thoughts about childcare in their local area.

Commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government, this study was first conducted in 2004 as part of the Childcare and Early Years Series. You can read the 2004 report here. Results from the 2009 survey will be published in November 2010.

Potential policy impact

The Welsh Childcare and Early Years Survey of Parents is an important way to monitor the progress of policies in the areas of childcare and early years education in Wales.

Methods

As part of this survey, face-to-face interviews were carried out with around 600 parents of children aged 14 and under. Parents were randomly selected to take part from Child Benefit records to make sure they were representative of all parents in Wales.
