What's involved?

Students signing up to take part within participating Further Education Colleges will complete a short survey and will nominate a ‘study supporter’, to support them over the academic year; this might be a friend, a parent or another relative. Students need to provide their mobile phone number and a name and mobile phone number for their selected study supporter.

The evaluation will take place from September 2017 to June 2018. Students will be randomly allocated to either receive either short weekly text messages themselves, for their study supporters to receive text messages, for both students and study supporters to receive text messages, or to receive no text messages at all.

Colleges will be asked to provide student level information so we can access data on the National Pupil Database (for example, students’ Unique Learner Numbers) as well as attendance data for all participating students. This information is vital to the evaluation; without it we will not be able to measure whether Project SUCCESS had an impact.

Please be assured that all data will be treated with the strictest confidence, complying with the Data Protection Act 1998, and the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

Interviews will also be carried out with elected project leads within each college, Maths and English leads, as well as some study supporters and students.
