UK Opinion is a study of the public's real views and opinions on issues from health and education, to immigration, your trust in politicians and fairness.

Established in 2001, UK Opinion is part of one of the largest studies of values and opinions in the world. Every other year people like you from across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and around 20 other countries share their attitudes and beliefs with us. In 2005, the study won the Descartes Prize for collaborative science.

What we have discovered so far

Since 2001, this research has shed light on a range of interesting and important topics.

  • Nearly 60% of UK graduates work in non-graduate jobs – the third highest in Europe.
  • Only 28% of Ukrainians believe that gay men and women should be free to live their own lives as they wish, compared to 84% in the UK.
  • Young people in Britain are among the least likely to vote in Europe. Only 40% of under-35 year olds in the UK voted in the last General Election, compared with 74% in the Netherlands.
  • Only 15% of Russians believe that gay men and women should be free to live their own lives as they wish, compared to 88% in the UK.
  • Around a fifth of people in the UK do not feel safe walking alone in their local area after dark.
