NatCen held a very exciting briefing last week entitled “Balancing parenthood and work”. The briefing was well attended with government department policy makers, academics and representatives from various charities with an interest field. Mari Toomse-Smith introduces the Maternity and paternity rights and women returners study that amongst many other colleagues at NatCen, she has been working on. We interviewed hundreds of mothers and fathers of young children about their experiences. The findings of this study have now been published by Department for Work and Pensions and shed much needed light on the recent development in this area.
