The main source of evidence for the Government on how much the public participates in digital, cultural and sporting activities.
Aim
This is the main source of evidence for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on how much the public participates in digital, cultural and sporting activities. It has three funding partners, Sport England, Arts Council England and Historic England. Taking Part is a survey national statistic status survey administered in a partnership with Ipsos Mori and NatCen.
The latest findings from the study were published in September 2019. All reports and findings are published on the statistical releases section of Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Explore the data
We have developed an online data analysis tool that allows users to produce bespoke tables and explore the survey.
The study looks at participation in the following activities:
- arts
- museums and galleries
- archives
- libraries
- heritage
- sport
- digital participation
It includes information on frequency of participation, reasons for participating, barriers to participation and attitudes to the sectors.
Methods
The Taking Part survey is a continuous face to face household survey of adults aged 16 and over and children aged 5 to 15 years old in England. It has run since 2005 and interviews around 10, 000 people a year. More information on methodology can be found in the Taking Part technical reports.
