Citizen Engagement on the Environment workshops

The research is taking place between November 2018 and November 2020 and has several key stages. As part of the project we are now running a series of two-day workshops with members of the public. These workshops will take place from January to April 2020 in four different locations in England.

The research is taking place between November 2018 and November 2020 and has several key stages. As part of the project we are now running a series of two-day workshops with members of the public. These workshops will take place from January to April 2020 in four different locations in England.

We want to understand:

  • What connects you to the environment;
  • The environmental issues that matter to you;
  • What you think about the environmental challenges we face and how we should address these.

Our findings will help Defra understand what environmental issues matter most to the general public and why, in order to help with future environmental policy planning and development.

Who is carrying out the research?

NatCen Social Research (NatCen), an independent research organisation, are leading a consortium of partners to deliver this project. This includes Involve, a public participation charity who are helping to deliver the workshops. The project is funded by Defra.

Why have I been invited to take part?

A recruitment agency, Propellor Research, will be inviting people to take part on behalf of NatCen. You will have been invited to a workshop that is taking place in your local area. If you have agreed to take part, a researcher from NatCen will contact you prior to the workshop to confirm your attendance and answer any questions you may have.

We want to get an idea of what environmental issues matter most to the public and why, in order to help with future environmental policy planning and development. That means we want people from all different backgrounds and all points of view to take part. This is a great opportunity to have input into the environmental policy priorities that Defra are considering.

What’s involved?

Each workshop will take place over two days (Saturday and Sunday) and will involve 30 members of the public. The workshops will be run by NatCen, and our partners at Involve. Prior to the workshop we would like you to find and bring along an object or picture that represents what matters to you about the environment. This could be anything, such as a printed picture, object or newspaper clipping.

The workshop will be interactive and engaging and include small group discussions where we will explore your feelings about the environment and environmental issues. During the event there will be environmental informants with expert knowledge to help answers any questions you might have. You don’t need to be an expert in environmental matters, in fact we would prefer that you weren’t.

You will receive £150 as a token of thanks for attending both days of the workshop. This will be in the form of a unique barcode that you can exchange for cash at any Post Office branch. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided across both days.

Do I have to take part?

No, taking part is voluntary – you do not have to take part if you don’t want to and you can always change your mind. If there is something you would rather not discuss, that is fine.

How will you deal with my personal information?

During the events we will ask for your permission to audio record the session so that we have an accurate record of the discussion. All recordings will be kept securely by us, and only the NatCen team will have access. NatCen will combine the findings from the event you attend along with findings from other events. A report will be shared with Defra. No names or other personal details will be included in the report.

We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2018. You can find out more about our credentials and who we are here and how we protect your personal information here.
