Information for parents

How will I know if my child has been selected for the evaluation?

Your child’s school will send you an information sheet inviting your child to be part of the evaluation.

Why has my child been selected?

Your child has been selected by the school, as they have been involved in the NFS programme, and helped to co-produce it. Your child is one 30 pupils at the school and one of many children across the country selected to take part.

If selected, what will my child have to do?

If your child is at a primary school: pupils will answer a questionnaire about their wellbeing, school engagement and views on the environment at the start of the programme (in Summer Term 2020), and again at the end (in Summer Term 2021). It takes about 30 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

In a small number of primary schools, 5-7 pupils will be invited to take part in a focus group discussion, to find out what they think about the outdoor learning activities. A NatCen researcher will also observe an outdoor learning activity.

If your child is at a secondary school, special school or alternative provision institution: 5-7 pupils will be invited to take part in a focus group discussion, to find out what they think about the outdoor learning activities. A NatCen researcher will also observe an outdoor learning activity in each selected school.

What if I don’t want my child to take part in the evaluation?

The school will send you an information sheet, and you will have two weeks to tell the school that you wish to opt out your child from the evaluation. If you opt your child out of the evaluation, they can still take part in the NFS programme.

What if I do want my child to take part in the evaluation?

You do not need to do anything.

How will you deal with my child’s personal information?
