Evaluation of the Best Start Grant
ScotCen has been funded by the Scottish Government to carry out an evaluation of the Best Start Grant. We want to speak to a range of different families across Scotland about their experiences of receiving one or more Best Start Grant payments.
Why is this research being carried out?
Over the last year the Scottish Government has started offering the Best Start Grant to parents and carers with young children who are in receipt of certain benefits or tax credits. As this is the first year this grant has been available, the Scottish Government would like to understand what recipients have used their grant for and what impact the grant has had.
Why take part?
You may find sharing your views on the effectiveness of the BSG enjoyable and this may help improve the service.
Taking part is completely voluntary, but we do hope you will get involved.
If you choose to take part, you will share your experiences of receiving a Best Start Grant with a trained ScotCen researcher.
You can choose what time the interview takes place. At this time, only telephone interviews will take place.
The interview will last around 30-60 minutes. As a thank you for taking part you will receive a £30 high street voucher.
Please note, that we may not be able to interview everyone who expresses an interest in taking part in an interview.
What will you ask me about?
We will ask you about your experience of receiving a Best Start Grant, including: what you used the grant for and what impact, if any, the grant has had on you or your family. We will not pass on any of your personal information to the Scottish Government and taking part in this research will not affect your claim to any benefits.
Do I have to answer all the questions?
Don’t worry – you don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to. Just let the interviewer know and they will move on to the next question.
How will you deal with my personal information?
We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the Data Protection Act 2018. You can find out more about how we protect your personal information here.
Why have I been contacted?
ScotCen asked organisations that are in contact with parents to advertise this research.
You are receiving this information because you have shown an interest in taking part in an interview about your experience of receiving a Best Start Grant.
Who is carrying out the research?
ScotCen has been commissioned by the Scottish Government to carry out this research. ScotCen is an independent not-for-profit organisation that believes that social research has the power to make life better.
