Survey of recently-appointed judges
The aim of this survey is to collect information on judges’ earnings prior to appointment to the judiciary. It has been commissioned to help inform the Major Review of the judicial salary structure being conducted by the Senior Salaries Review Body.
All judges appointed in the last three years are being invited to take part in the survey. This includes all salaried, part-time and fee-paid judges.
If you have been invited to take part, you will have received an email from the judicial office in your jurisdiction which includes a link to the survey.
Why take part?
Information on pre-appointment salaries is not available elsewhere, so this survey is a key source of evidence for the SSRB’s Major Review of judicial pay.
The findings of the survey will be used to inform the recommendations that the SSRB makes on judicial pay in June 2018.
It is important for the validity of the findings that as many judges as possible take part in this survey: the more judges who take part, the more accurate and representative the results will be.
What type of questions will I need to answer?
In the survey, you will be asked to provide information about your earnings for the last three complete financial years before your appointment to a judicial post.
You do not have to prepare anything in advance.
You will be able to save and return to the partially-completed questionnaire if needed.
How will you protect my information?
We will treat the information you give us in the strictest confidence under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998. Participants’ names will not be linked to any of the information provided within the survey, and no identifiable information will be included in the research report.
You can find out more about how we protect your information here.
NatCen is working with judicial officers to contact judges and will not have access to participants’ names, contact details, or other identifying information.
How is the survey funded?
This research is funded by the Office of Manpower Economics (OME), which provides secretariat support to all public sector Pay Review Bodies.
Who is running the survey?
The National Centre for Social Research has been commissioned by OME to undertake the survey of newly appointed judges. NatCen is a wholly independent research organisation.
