UKRI Covid-19 Student Consultation

We are conducting a study on doctoral students’ experiences of UKRI Covid-19 funded extensions.

What is the research trying to find out?

Earlier this year, UKRI announced that funded extensions of up to 6 months would be made available to all UKRI-funded doctoral students whose funding ended between March 2020 and March 2021, where work was disrupted by Covid-19 and lockdown. UKRI also announced that extensions for students whose funding ends later will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The aim of this project is to understand students’ experiences of UKRI’s extension policies, the wider effects of Covid-19 on students’ work and well-being, and the mitigating strategies and support that institutions have offered.

What does taking part involve?

Participants will be asked to attend an online group discussion with 5-7 other UKRI-funded doctoral students. This will last up to 90 minutes, and will be facilitated by a researcher from NatCen. Online group discussions will take place between 20 – 31 July 2020.

Participation in this study will not affect the outcome of any decisions regarding funded extensions.

How do I register my interest?

Eligible students will be contacted by UKRI, and asked to complete a short questionnaire. If you have not been contacted by UKRI and would like to express an interest in the study, please contact the NatCen study team via no later than 17 July 2020.

How will the data from the study be used?

Findings from the project will be used to write a report summarising the key findings to UKRI on the implementation of its extension policies on doctoral training and wellbeing from students’ perspectives.

All information shared during the study will be treated as confidential, and all participant data will be fully anonymised before it is shared with UKRI. For more information, please see our privacy notice.

Who do I contact if I have questions?
